A Matter of Measurement

Inches or centimeters? Miles or kilometers? Gallons or liters? Pounds or kilos? Does the unit of measure matter? Did that recipe call for ounces or 2 liters of liquid? Did that traffic sign say 65 kilometers per hour or miles per hour? If you want to be accurate, you better pay attention or else you will end up in a world of hurt!

By what means do you measure perfection? Car manufacturers claim they have attained it, makeup companies want you to think that their products can help you achieve it. We don’t claim to be perfect, yet we’re pretty close, aren’t we? We certainly don’t expect others to be perfect…but we sure are quick to note their failings! We should take heed to what Jesus said in Matthew 7:2, “For with the judgement you pronounce, you will be judged, and with the measurement you use it will be measured to you.”

Are our “measurement standards” the same? Not even close! We each have our own likes and dislikes, our own feeling of what is right or wrong, and even what is good or bad. Need an example? You got it! Broccoli…you heard me…B-R-O-C-C-O-L-I. Broccoli. That wonderful green vegetable that tastes so delicious! Wait. What? You mean there are those reading this that dare disagree with my assessment?

We live in a world where everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is relative. Even “perfection.” Every company tries to set “The Standard.” Everyone you talk to has a different set of moral standards because, you know, it’s all relative. “What I do is my business, not yours, so keep your beliefs and morals out of my face! I’ll do as I please. Your moral standard is no better than mine!”

But, there IS a Standard. There IS perfection. There is something that has no flaws or imperfections…God’s Word. It is THE Standard by which we should set the course of our life. It is something we can hold on to when the imperfect things of life swirl around us. When the storms come, we can take refuge in the stronghold of God’s perfect Word.

“Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.”   Proverbs 30:5
