There is Meaning in the Menial
Let’s get right to the point…Your life matters!
That’s right. In a world of over eight billion people, you matter! And, get this: what you do matters, as well. You might be thinking…I’m too old…I’m too young…I’m just a number in the system…nobody cares what I do…nobody notices me…I don’t have any talent…I don’t have anything to offer to this world…
And nothing could be further from the truth! God, the Creator of everything, has His eye on you and nothing you goes unnoticed by Him! That can be a very unsettling thought if we are doing something we know for a fact is in violation of His commands. But, it is very comforting and is rock solid assurance that we are loved by the only One Whose opinion really matters! In Psalm 139, David is overwhelmed with the fact that God sees him, and not only sees him, but has known him! “O LORD, you have searched me and known me! (English Standard Version) What an almost incomprehensible thought: God knows us and notices us!
Want a few more assurances? Here are but a few verses that show us God’s love for us. I encourage you to read them in their entirety:
* John 3:16 — God so loved the world that He gave His only Son for us.
Romans 5:8 — God shows His love for us in the fact that Christ died for us, not because of our “good works” but while we were yet sinners!
Romans 8:38-39 — There is nothing in all creation that can separate us from God’s love.
Philippians 1:6 — God started a good work in you and will bring it to completion!
So now that we have it settled that God does, in fact, love you, you might still be unconvinced that your time on earth matters in the grand scheme of things. You may think, “How can I have meaning in this life if all I do are menial chores? If only I could be like (fill in the blank). Guess what? You were never meant to be anyone else but YOU. Psalm 139:16 bears this out: “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (English Standard Version)
Every moment of every day is meaningful when we understand that we matter to God Almighty. Not a second goes by that He doesn’t take note of us. Everything we do matters. Let us remember for Whom we work, and that will change our perspective completely!
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward.” (Colossians 3:23, English Standard Version)
